Willcox is the gateway to your exploration of the Chiricahua National Monument. The 8-mile paved scenic drive and 17-miles of day-use hiking trails provide opportunities to discover the beauty, natural sounds, and inhabitants of this 11,985 acre site. This traditional haunt of Cochise and his Chiricahua Apache band was declared a preserve in 1924. Known as the "Wonderland of Rocks," this territory is truly monumental, with startling rock formations, a natural bridge, and a ledge formed entirely of volcanic hailstones. Visit the Faraway Ranch Historic District to discover more about the people who have called this area home. The 'Chiricahuas' are a premier site for hiking, birding, and wildlife viewing. Allow 2-3 hours for your visit, though avid hikers may expect an all-day trip. The Monument is open 24 hours daily with campsites available; the Visitor Center is open 8am to 4:30pm daily, closing on Christmas.
